The Latino Coalition for Prevention was incorporated in 2004. Those involved with the coalition are dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of Latino communities in the state of Illinois by upholding the values of prevention, collaboration, and celebration of cultural strengths. Consistent with its mission, the coalition provides culturally competent education and resources for prevention professionals; builds relationships between community groups, leaders, the media and educational institutions, and promotes community capacity building for the Latino community in the state of Illinois.
The Coalition stemmed from the support provided by Prevention First, Inc. who in conjunction with a group of Chicago-area providers sponsored the creation of the Latino Prevention Network. Since 1997, the Network devoted itself to the prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, as well as the prevention of HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy, domestic violence, disease, gang involvement, violence and school drop out. In December 2003, the Latino Prevention Network evolved into the Latino Coalition for Prevention at a summit of Latino Leaders. Similarly, the commitment of the coalition is rooted in the common goal of working together to create healthy, safe Latino communities.
On May 2007, the Coalition was granted 501 (c) (3) status.
